A career journalist with over thirty years of experience, S Vicknesan, began his career in 1984 with the National Echo tabloid in Penang, Malaysia before joining the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) a year later as a junior reporter.
He left after nine years as Senior Sub-editor and had a brief foray into the world of advertising while pursuing a professional qualification in Business Management. The lure of the newsroom, however, proved irresistible and in 1996 he accepted senior editorial postings in Phnom Penh, Cambodia with the New Cambodian broadsheet as editor-in-chief and subsequently in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darusalaam with The News Express tabloid as Chief Sub-editor.
Upon his return to Malaysia in 2001, he joined malaysiakini.com as its Opinions and Features Editor but left a year later to take up the position of Associate Editor for two regional publications, Asian Defence & Diplomacy and Asian Airlines and Aerospace.
He returned to malaysiakini.com in 2004 to once again assume his former portfolio with the country’s most-read news website that has since won various international awards including Asiaweek’s “Asia’s Most Powerful Communicators” (2001) and Businessweek’s ‘Stars of Asia’ (2001), as well as, accolades from the International Press Institute, the Committee to Protect Journalists, and Reporters Without Borders.
Vicknesan then joined Yahoo! as Country Editor for Malaysia where he delivered on branding and editorial targets before taking up a senior position at The Edge Media Group in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He returned to malaysiakini.com as Chief Sub-Editor briefly before assuming a contract position as Editorial Lead at Microsoft’s MSN.com. Following completion of that contract, he returned to malaysiakini.com.
